About the city
St. Petersburg is one of the few cities that have a strong cultural and historical background. This magnificent city was founded in 1703 by one of the most important Tsars in the Russian Empire; we are talking about Peter the Great. This important Tsar in Russia made some important positive changes in the city during his period as an emperor. The city is situated near the Gulf of Finland at the Neva River.
Nowadays, St. Petersburg is considered as a federal city, the second biggest town and one of the principal touristic areas in Russia because it attracts thousands of tourists from different parts of the world each year. The population is 4.7 million of inhabitants approximately. Throughout the history, the city of St. Petersburg has been changing its name several times. For instance, in 1914 the city was named as Petrograd (Петрогр́ад) and later in 1924, it was called as Leningrad ((Ленингр́ад). However, in 1991 the city was called again as Saint Petersburg. We have to mention that all these changes were for political purposes.
It is strongly recommended to visit the city in June because it is warm and foreigners can be part of some fabulous celebrations at night. June is considered as the peak season where everything is expensive and the city is overcrowded by tourists. Other recommended months to visit St. Petersburg is September and October because the humidity and the temperature drops significantly in these months and there are a lot of fresh winds around the city.

As we’ve mentioned before, St. Petersburg is considered as one of the most important touristic cities in Russia because of its marvelous characteristics. As an example, we can mention the historical center, the well-preserved buildings with fantastic architectonic style, the baroque bridges, the rich traditions, the delicious food, the excellent art work, the kind people, the active night life and the breathtaking natural landscapes.
Furthermore, tourists can find several historical attractions such as the Winter Palace of the most popular Dynasty in Russia: the Romanov Dynasty, and the Hermitage Museum that is located inside the Palace. The museum includes fabulous art collections and valuable stuff of gold and silver. The UNESCO declared this site as a World Heritage site. Without a doubt, this city has all the elements for you to have an unforgettable vacation time.

What we don’t like:
- St. Petersburg is always full of foreigners during the entire year. For those who are looking for a calm place, they have to consider that this city may not be the best place for them.
- In June, the products and services are extremely expensive it is considered as a peak season. In addition, the accommodation facilities are full and it is difficult to find some room during this time.
- Even though the security system is quite well; international students need to avoid areas where the skinheads inhabit.
- The winters are a little bit unbearable because the temperature drops drastically; it can be under cero. That is why it is recommended that students wear coats and sweaters to avoid getting sick.
