However, this city includes some amazing features and historical areas that attract thousands of foreigners and locals each year.

Nowadays, the city of Nizhni Novgorod represents one of the main cultural and economic centers in the country. It is also the center of transportation. That is why this city is considered as one of the most important towns. The city was founded in 1221 by the Duke George II. In addition, the city has some prestigious universities and education centers where foreign students can take a professional career or learn the Russian language properly.

About the city

Even though the city of Nizhni Novgorod (Ни́жний Но́вгород) is not a popular destination for foreigners, there is a lot of activities to do and historic areas to visit. The city is considered as the fifth largest city in the country because of its population of 1,250,615 inhabitants approximately. This town is locally known as Nizhny and it was founded in the year of 1221 by the Great Russian Duke George II.

Strategically, the city was built between the confluences of two important natural resources; we are talking about the Oka and Volga rivers. That’s why the town, like Moscow and St. Petersburg, is a principal economic and cultural hub in the country. In addition, the city of Nizhny Novgorod is quite important because it has some of the most recognized IT and Engineering industries in the world. As an example we can mention Hydromash, Nitel, Gorky Automobile Plant, RUMO and Sokol.

There are more than twenty technological institutions that do research in the fields of telecommunications, radio technology and applied physics. In addition, there are a lot of professionals who are specialized in software development. Some of the biggest educational institutions that support the IT technology investigations are the Nizhni Novgorod State University, the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Information Technologies, the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy and the Nizhny Novgorod Technical University.

As any other city in Russia, Nizhni Novgorod has a big cultural and historical background that is represented in several monuments, ancient constructions and art collections. In fact, the majority of the city center was constructed with a Russian Revival style. Tourists will be able to find a large number of well-preserved structures and several impressive monuments throughout the city. Recently, the UNESCO declared the city as one of the best cities that have a big cultural and historical value.

The city also has valuable and wonderful art collections made by prestigious artists from Russia such as Vasily Surikov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Karl Briullov and Ivan Shishkin to mention a few. Travelers can also find impressive Catholic monasteries (abbeys) like the Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Virgin's Nativity Church, The Annunciation Monastery, Church of Our Lady of Smolensk and the Assumption Church.

Why learn Russian in Nizhni Novgorod?

The city of Nizhni Novgorod was, in the past, a rich city culturally and economically speaking because it served as a big commercial trade center for Russia. That is why this town was sacked and burned several times by many invaders. The city was rebuilt after these several destructions. In this fashion, tourists can find a large number of stunning landmarks and well preserved constructions such as churches, palaces, walls and much more.

The city was initially constructed to serve as a military outpost in 1221. However, its strategic location (since it is situated between two important rivers Oka and Volga) Nizhni Novgorod became more a commercial city. Nowadays, the city is quite modern and it offers amazing accommodation facilities for foreigners. In addition, there are great universities, language schools and other educational institutions. People who are interested in exploring the city and studying Russian language at the same time need to visit this fantastic city.

As a modern city in Russia, Nizhni Novgorod has plenty of accommodation facilities for international students.
As in any other city in Russia, the city of Nizhni Novgorod has many prestigious universities such as the Linguistic University of Nizhny Novgorod, the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University and the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Developing Education, to mention just a few. There are also excellent language schools around the entire city.

What we don't like:

Even though the city is very popular in Russia, this town is not well known in other parts of the world.
The weather in the city of Nizhni Novgorod can be extreme in winter; it ranges from -11° centigrade to -25° centigrade. In this fashion, it is not recommendable to visit the city during this season.
The city a little bit far away from important cities such as St. Petersburg or Moscow. In fact, the city is situated 280 miles (400 Kilometers) away from Moscow.
The city is quite small and students can get bored in a short time. In addition, the city does not have an active nightlife.

Russian courses in Nizhni Novgorod

CREF

The CREF Language School is a prestigious educational program that provides several efficient Russian language courses for international students. The CREF offers several training rooms in different cities of Russia such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhni Novgorod. All the training rooms have modern audio and video equipment. It is situated at the Pokrovskaya Street in the city center. The classes have duration of four hours every day from Monday to Friday. Each class starts with six students max.
